Research Practices

Here are a few pages of my sketch book showing my researching into different methods of creating new and exciting jewellery and accessories.

Using laser cutting really inspires me, after doing my research i have found some really interesting ways of creating new and exciting shapes and textures inspired by sea life and the coral reef. I feel it is a good platform to start developing my ideas on further to see how far i can push them to create really exciting and new accessories.

The unique shapes on tropical fish really allows me to expand much further my designs into unique shapes and textures.

Sun glasses are also a possibility as it can be a simple shape of the sun glasses and then shapes can be layered up to create the effect of the sea life and the coral.

If i were to create jewellery i would want it to be more like body jewellery, this would be more unique and really stand out. Whilst doing my research these are the most simple to my ideas that i have found yet they are still very different, so my designs will be new and no other design the same or even slightly similar.

When i begin my sampling and designing i could look into layering and what layering different colours would look like if the colours were taken from the fish or if it would be better just to keep the natural colour palette, very neutral colours and just take the inspiration from the tropical fish for the shapes that could be possibly laser cut out.

Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion, Barbican Art Gallery London

The barbican in London held an exhibition called Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese fashion exploring the history of Japanese fashion.

The exhibition consisted of a series of rooms showcasing Japanese fashion in relation to art and culture. Showing over 100 pieces that explored avant-garde Japanese fashion from the early 1980’s until now. The exhibitors were designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto.

When entering the room it was a relaxing atmosphere with the white sheer fabric draped from the ceiling slowly leading you around the room. With soft music playing in the background it set a scene for the avant-garde designs.

The lower gallery space is divided into four themed sections, in praise of shadows, flatness, tradition and innovation and cool Japan. While the upper space has dedicated a room for each designer to showcase there work spanning three decades of fashion.

Frayed hems, unfinished seams and abnormal folds were common amongst the pieces it was keeping detail to a minimum within some garments. New shapes had been created, they were inspired against the western world and how everything was tailored and had to fit perfectly. Rei Kawakubo was one of the main leaders in this style of fashion; she created garments that deformed the human shape she was designing against women’s form. 30 years of Japanese fashion shows this movement within Japanese fashion and showed how designers were inspired by this change from big designers such as Issey Miyake to less well known designers who were influenced by her work.

As the stairwell leads you to the top and garments suddenly become clear as small exhibitions for each designer have been created and the sound of different videos playing showing each of the catwalk shows and interviews with the designers. Different moods are created as you walk into each of the rooms.

Issey Miyake A-POC is a stretched knit that can be cut along lines to create your own clothing this was stretched from floor to ceiling in a blood red, which was the main focal point of down stairs, other items seemly lost around it with such a vivid colour.

An interview is shown where Kawakubo talks of her designs and her inspirations within her work. Kawakubo rarely talks about her inspirations and her designs. There is a build up of intensity as you walk around as the videos get faster and the music becomes more up beat on each of the videos and finally the last room doesn’t have any music playing but it is the largest collection. It shows vivid colours, prints and patterns all in random designs on coats jackets and dresses. The final collection couldn’t have had any music or a video as it would of taken away from the intensity of the collection. The exhibition showcased Japanese fashion over the past 30 years and showed a small portion of the magnificent work that has been created taking the viewer on a tour of Japanese history.

Enterprise.......wool and chiffon handmade bag

Handmade shopping bags.

I have designed a small shopping bag that can be used as a hand bag or as shopping bag as it can hold a small amount of weight.

There is no fastening or zips on the top of the bag, therefore it can be folded up easily so can be carried around everywhere.

I have used two contrasting fabrics, a wool and a thin chiffon, the colours are very contrasting combining a grey with a dark purple which gives the bags a little twist. They are elegant yet strong with the wool.

A long thin design so they fit a lot of things in, yet aren't bulky. Creating a multipurpose design for shopping to avoid using paper or plastic bags or for just everyday use.

Enterprise.... Hand made bags

Hand made bags from recycled good quality fabric.
These bags have been made from only good quality fabric and well made meaning they will last longer as overall they are better quality.

I have used off cuts of fabric meaning nothing has gone to waste.

These are a few samples of bags and the fabric that i could use, there are several different designs, but i just want to carry forward three. It is enough for there to be variation for people to choose from but a small enough number so the collection can easily be expanded when needed.
